Felicia took the phone. Nox stormed to the kitchen, although he was whistling, meaning he was happy about the last remarks he’d overheard. Mark retreated to his car.

Winters, looking lost, allowed himself to be pulled upstairs by Delia and blinked when she started dabbing his face with a wet washcloth. “Oh. He did get me, didn’t he?”

“Your lip looks like it’s growing a strawberry.” Delia rolled her eyes. “It’s all my fault. I’m so sorry. I freaked out and I made you rush over. I acted like a baby. I dragged you over here for nothing.” Delia finished her apology as she passed Winters the antiseptic cream and he swiped it around the edge of his bottom lip.

“Firstly, I didn’t even notice he hit me,” Winters smiled, which was now rather painful.

“Adrenaline?”

“You. You needed help and you called on me. I trust you. When Delia Montgomery says something is off, something is off.”

“Well, yeah, but I could have waited. You guys were coming over anyway.”

“I rushed over because I care about you. A-and Felicia, of course.”

“And Nox?”

“Let’s not push this, shall we?”

“I’m glad you don’t think I acted like a dumb teenager.”

“I’m afraid I can’t say I see you as a teenager anymore, Dear.” Winters smiled complacently. “You’re just Delia now.”

“Just Delia?” A sudden glow was prompted by his words, and she smiled confidently at him, tossing her glossy brown hair back over her shoulders.

“Yes. Just Delia. A bloody pain in the arse.”

“I knew it was too good to be true.” She giggled. “A real compliment from Winters.”

“I compliment all of you, often. Why- just last week I told you I liked your new haircut.”

“Except that I haven’t had a haircut since before Christmas.”

“Ahh.”

“For a Guardian in charge of monitoring the CrossRealms and the fate of the world, you slack on observation, man.”
